Sunset in the steppe by the sea - Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi. 39.5 x 53 cm

The painting "Sunset in the steppe on the seashore" was painted in 1898-1908. It is possible that Kuindzhi's hand was driven by a religious feeling - a feeling of involvement of a luminary having a divine nature in the very possibility of beauty.

The prevalence of sun worship in ancient cults is not surprising: the sun was revered by the Egyptians, Greeks, Indians. There was not a single people who did not deify the main star for the Earth, who did not give her a human name and miraculous properties.

The artist’s consciousness is somewhat close to the primitive. He does not know, but captures. He does not master, according to the instructions, does not count, but allows the inspiration that covers him to do all the work for him.

So did primitive people, free of the burden of knowledge and methodologies. Kuindzhi did this when he portrayed the red face of the sun god.

The picture is filled with a gradation of colors characteristic of Arkhip Ivanovich. Every detail, every brush stroke is thought out.

Over the wide strip of the steppe near the seashore lies the radiance of the “golden city” - overflows of sunset shades of yellow, orange and scarlet flowers. The rays of the sun are reflected in the sea, giving the water an extraordinary goldenness. Against the background of the outgoing day, the earth acquires a dark color scheme, and in the air you can feel the coolness and aroma of the steppe grasses and the salty sea.

The work of Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi is imbued with philosophical motives. The author is not obliged to be aware of what his picture means, to solve it is our viewer task.

The sight glides along the irreparably smooth surface of the boundless steppe. Everything around is empty. It is not known what will happen to those who deviate to the side. It is only clear that one who will go straight, without turning off the path, will come to the goal, to the source of light, deity and beauty.
