“Sunset at sea”, Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky - description of the painting

Sunset at sea - Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky. Canvas, oil.

Two elements - sea and air, subtly changing every minute, always attracted artists who wanted to capture them on their canvases. The soft, gentle light of the morning dawn, the bright colors of the blinding midday sun, the mysterious light of the moon or the glowing shades of sunset - all these moments are magnificently conveyed in his paintings by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky.

He travels a lot, with a good visual memory, he paints seascapes that amaze with its authenticity and beauty. One of the master’s favorite stories is sunset at sea.

Low ash-gray clouds draw into the darkening blue sky, leaving only a narrow strip near the horizon, where through the light whitish haze of fog rising from the water, a low-lying bright yellow sun is visible. Under its rays, the sky above the sea glows with warm honey-orange, delicate lilac shades, pale coral reflections lie on the clouds.

The endless sea is worried, the water has turned dark purple, almost black, and only smoky pink and reddish glare of the solar path shimmer. Waves with white foam on the crest beat against the shore of a small bay with noise. Seagulls fly low above them.

On a narrow cape, near the water, with legs apart for stability, two people stand confidently under the gusts of wind, raising their hands in a farewell gesture. A third person helps the sailboat overcome the big surf. The oars work closely together, the captain is standing on the bow of the boat. All his attention is concentrated on the two-masted sailing vessel, which is swinging at high waves, standing near the shore. The setting sun illuminates its deck well, golden-pink highlights lie on the masts and yards. The fastening wind inflates the flag at the stern of the ship.

On a small cliff overlooking the sea, stands a windmill. Work is still boiling on it - the outlines of two people standing at the edge and the figures of people carrying bags are visible in the sunset sky.

Near the mill in the evening twilight the walls of a small hut with a thatched roof whiten.

Cold lilac and blue-black tones are combined with warm orange and yellow-pink colors, conveying a sense of anxiety and an approaching storm. With elusive transitions of shades, he manages to convey the real movement of waves and clouds.

But we believe - the ship will straighten the sails and go through the storm towards a new day.

The picture inspires confidence, gives hope. We admire the skill of the artist, who managed to convey the living beauty of the evening sea.
