“Breakfast”, Francois Boucher - description of the painting

Breakfast - Francois Boucher. 66 x 82 cm

In the 1730s, the artist of the Rococo era, Francois Boucher, was fond of a changeable fate. In addition, in 1733, Boucher successfully married the lovely seventeen-year-old Marie-Jeanne Buzot, who became the artist's faithful muse and companion.

The painting "Breakfast" created in 1739 is an ode to well-being and quiet family happiness. Researchers suggest that the painter’s family is depicted on the canvas: the master’s wife sits on the right, a small son sits at her feet, the sister with the young couple’s daughter on the left, and the author, the owner of the house, is behind.

The Boucher family breakfasts peacefully at a small table, the faces of those present express joy, contentment and calm. Love and sincere warmth of feelings shine in everyone’s eyes. Marie-Jeanne affectionately looks at his son, who brought his favorite toys with him. The home attire carefully hides the figure of the wife, which is most likely due to the interesting situation and the birth of the second daughter in April 1740. The viewer does not see the face of Sister Boucher, but the care with which the aunt holds her niece is perfectly read. Standing at a table by the mirror shelf, the head of the family ensures that the ladies cups are always filled with hot aromatic coffee.

The cozy atmosphere of a joint breakfast is masterfully conveyed by the artist with the help of contrasting spots and careful selection of colors. Francois Boucher uses both dark, deep shades to indicate shadows, and light tones of the rays of the morning sun, coloring the room in a soft golden velvet color.

Boucher's design talent in working on this painting was revealed especially vividly. The master’s attentiveness to details and careful drawing of interior elements speaks of impeccable taste and excellent knowledge of the fashionable at that time style. The canvas “Breakfast” is considered not just another charming genre scene - it is a frozen moment of the artist’s personal happiness.
